can TECHNOLOGY be the answer?

Την Παρασκευή 5 και το σαββατοκύριακο 6 & 7 Noεμβρίου 2021 διεξήχθησαν οι εργασίες του 7ου Μοντέλου Ηνωμένων Εθνών των Αρσακείων-Τοσιτσείων Σχολείων Πάτρας [7th ATSMUN 2021 (Web Edition)]. Το συνέδριο είχε τον τίτλο “democratization-economic recession-wars-pandemic- can TECHNOLOGY be the answer?” και φέτος, για δεύτερη χρονιά, πραγματοποιήθηκε διαδικτυακά λόγω των ειδικών επιδημιολογικών συνθηκών. Στο συνέδριο συμμετείχαν 6 μαθητές της Α΄ τάξης, 1 μαθήτρια της Β΄τάξης και 1 μαθητής της Γ΄τάξης του Αρσακείου Λυκείου Θεσσαλονίκης. Μεταξύ άλλων, οι συμμετοχές σχολείων από την Γαλλία και την Βραζιλία, ενίσχυσαν τον διεθνή χαρακτήρα του συνεδρίου.

Κάθε μαθητικό συνέδριο ΜUN διεξάγεται αποκλειστικά στα Αγγλικά και αποτελεί μια άσκηση προσομοίωσης των εργασιών του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών μέσα από τη βιωματική εκπαίδευση στα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και στον ενεργό ρόλο των πολιτών. Οι μαθητές/τριες σε ρόλο διπλωμάτη ερευνούν, ενημερώνονται και ευαισθητοποιούνται σχετικά με διεθνή προβλήματα επικαιρότητας, ασκούν τη ρητορική ικανότητά τους μέσα από την τεκμηρίωση απόψεων και την άσκηση δημοκρατικού δημόσιου λόγου, και αναπτύσσουν δεξιότητες όπως η ανεκτικότητα, η διπλωματική συμπεριφορά και στάση, η κριτική σκέψη,  ο αλληλοσεβασμός.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του συνεδρίου, οι μαθητές/τριές μας ανέλαβαν ρόλους διπλωματών-απεσταλμένων ξένων χωρών, διερεύνησαν την πολιτική των χωρών τους σε θέματα ημερήσιας διάταξης και δημιούργησαν συμμαχίες, για να προτείνουν συναινετικές λύσεις με τη μορφή ψηφισμάτων. Συζήτησαν φλέγοντα ζητήματα που απασχολούν την παγκόσμια κοινότητα και σχετίζονται με την τρέχουσα πανδημία, όπως η διανομή των εμβολίων και οι πολιτικές δημόσιας υγείας ως μέσο επιβολής της νέας εποχής, η καταπολέμηση της παραβίασης των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων κατά τη διάρκεια πανδημιών, η νομιμότητα των μέτρων που λαμβάνονται σε περιόδους κρίσεων και η σημασία των ψηφιακών πλατφορμών και των πρόσθετων υπηρεσιών στην επίβλεψη και την καθοδήγηση ασθενών κατά τη διάρκεια των υγειονομικών κρίσεων. Μεταξύ άλλων πρότειναν λύσεις για ζητήματα, όπως η κατάσταση στη Μιανμάρ, η εξάλειψη της βίας και της σεξουαλικής κακοποίησης σε εργασιακά περιβάλλοντα, η θέσπιση νομοθεσίας για την προστασία του κοινού από την παραπληροφόρηση και τις θεωρίες συνωμοσίας,  η γονιδιωματική και οι επιπτώσεις της στην υγεία, η χρήση των μικροβίων και της νανοτεχνολογίας στην υπηρεσία της διάσωσης του πλανήτη, καθώς και η συμβολή της τεχνολογίας στην βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη.

Παράλληλα, η επιτροπή προσομοίωσης του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας (Security Council) ασχολήθηκε με την εξέλιξη της σύγκρουσης Ισραήλ-Παλαιστίνης μετά το 2021 και την διαμόρφωση της κατάστασης στην Συρία μετά το πέρας του πολέμου. Ο Ίων Λαδόπουλος, μαθητής της Γ΄ Λυκείου, συμμετείχε ενεργά  στις εργασίες της επιτροπής εκπροσωπώντας την Εσθονία. Αντίστοιχα, η επιτροπή προσομοίωσης του Διεθνούς Δικαστηρίου της Χάγης (International Court of Justice-ICJ)) συζήτησε την υπόθεση της εδαφικής, νησιωτικής και ναυτικής αξίωσης της Γουατεμάλας (Υπόθεση Γουατεμάλα εναντίον Μπελίζ). Η Κατερίνα Αναγνωστοπούλου, μαθήτρια της Β΄ Λυκείου, ανέλαβε ουσιαστικό ρόλο στην εκδίκαση της υπόθεσης από την θέση του δικαστή. Τέλος, ο Νικήτας Παπαδόπουλος, περσινός απόφοιτος του Λυκείου μας, διέπρεψε ως πρόεδρος της ειδικής επιτροπής Πολιτικών Θεμάτων & Αποαποικιοποίησης (GA2-SPECPOL).

Οι 6 μαθητές και μαθήτριες της Α΄ Λυκείου που εκπροσώπησαν την Εσθονία και το Βέλγιο ήταν οι Φίλιππος Γιαννακόπουλος (Delegate of Estonia, GA2-Special Political Decolonization Committee), Μάγδα Γιαννάκη (Delegate of Estonia, GA3 – Social Humanitarian Committe), Ερμιόνη Παναγιωτίδου (Delegate of Estonia, GA4 – Legal Committe), Φωτεινή Παπαστεργίου (Delegate of Estonia, World Health Organization-WHO), Αγάπη Ναθαναηλίδου (Delegate of Estonia, United Nations Environmental Programme-UNEP) και Δανάη Νανούση (Delegate of Belgium, United Nations Environmental Programme-UNEP).

As far as the ATSMUN conference is concerned, it was undoubtedly a great experience and I will definitely participate in it again in the future. Our chairs were amazing and I think that we were so lucky to have them -shout out to Nikitas and Modesti! Not only were they not strict but they answered to all questions and provided their delegates with constant support when problems occurred. The delegates were really nice, having an excellent knowledge of English which made the conference quite challenging. For all the reasons above, let me thank you all, including Mrs. Kostara, who helped me tons!

ATSMUN was a whole new experience for me. At the beginning, I did not know anything about the format or how the whole procedure worked but, throughout the sessions, I found out that it was really interesting and dealt with important global issues. What really excited me was the comprehension of other countries’ opinions as far as sexual harassment and human rights are concerned. Debating on the resolution papers and observing the different reactions of various countries to critical situations was thought-provoking and totally new to me. The truth is that I was a little bit worried about how to present my position paper but I did my best and tried to be to the point. I also fancied the breakout rooms, which was a way of getting closer, interacting with other people and listening to their opinions. Moreover, I was fascinated by the General Assembly, where all of the GA committees were discussing this year’s agenda topics. All in all, ATSMUN is informative and educational, and participating as a delegate in such a conference definitely makes students feel more knowledgeable of current issues all over the world and motivated to keep learning and gaining valuable experience.

Last weekend I took part in my first MUN conference. It was an excellent experience and I will definitely participate again in the future. During this year’s 7th ATSMUN conference, I represented Belgium in the United Nations Environmental Committee (UNEP) and the debated topics were very interesting and of vital importance. While the committee delegates were hesitant to communicate at first, by the end of the first hour collaboration became much more effective. Not to mention that our chairs were the best! They were both friendly and provided us with their immense support. My favourite part of ATSMUN is that, even though it was online, I still managed to make a lot of friends who I continued communicating with after the end of the conference.

ATSMUN was a unique and really fun experience. We had the chance to meet new people and make new friends, we learned a lot about things we had never heard before and about many different countries, we shared our opinions on topics of vital importance and we also had a hot debate with other delegates. The chairs were very helpful and supportive; they were actually interested in getting to know us, they always made sure we were having a great time and they did not put any pressure on us at all. We would both like to participate in an MUN conference again soon and we are really looking forward to joining the next one!

Since this was my second year participating in an MUN conference, I had already been aware of the procedure and, thus, felt better-prepared. That was the reason why I participated more actively this time and found the whole conference more enjoyable. Even though it felt repetitive at times, the gossip box comments, which were revealed on the final day of my committee session, were definitely worth it!

Having entered the world of MUN conferences, I must admit that, after all these years, I am still absolutely delighted! Since I have served as a delegate for a multitude of times, this year I wanted to get a more comprehensive view of these amazing conferences and, thus, decided to participate in a non-GA committee. After careful consideration, nothing seemed to be more appropriate than applying for a judge position in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thanks to the constant support and assistance provided by our honorable coordinator, Mr. Stern, this experience became even more interesting and exciting, yet easier. I loved every moment in this MUN court and I am grateful that I was elected and honored to be part of it. I would definitely participate again in the future, were I given a similar opportunity.

MUN conferences are an amazing opportunity that every individual should experience. They teach us how to carefully study particularly complex issues of utmost importance to our planet’s sustainability and prosperity, such as those of the Security Council, my committee in this year’s ATSMUN conference. The agenda topics discussed were the ongoing Palestinian and Syrian conflicts. I was asked not only to be thoroughly informed about sensitive issues of exceptional difficulty, but also to brainstorm and recommend viable solutions. According to our countries’ policies and through mutual dialogue, diplomatic negotiations and multilateral cooperation of all delegates, we proposed resolutions that will put an end to these plagues of the modern era. I had an amazing time with all of my committee members and I do hope that next time I will be able to enjoy my participation in global politics and international diplomacy along with my co-delegates, in a live and not an online conference.
