Προσομοίωση Διαγωνισμού Μετάφρασης

Ο ετήσιος διαγωνισμός Juvenes Translatores [εδώ] διοργανώνεται από το 2007 υπό την αιγίδα της Γενικής Διεύθυνσης Μετάφρασης της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής και απευθύνεται στους τελειόφοιτους μαθητές δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης σε όλη την ΕΕ. Σκοπός του είναι να δώσει στα νέα παιδιά μια γεύση από το επάγγελμα του μεταφραστή, να προωθήσει την εκμάθηση ξένων γλωσσών και να αναδείξει την πλούσια γλωσσική πολυμορφία της ΕΕ.

Φέτος, αν και δεν κληρωθήκαμε για να συμμετάσχουμε στον επίσημο διαγωνισμό, ανταποκριθήκαμε στην πρό[σ]κληση από το γραφείο της Γενικής Διεύθυνσης Μετάφρασης στην Αθήνα να διοργανώσουμε μία προσομοίωση του διαγωνισμού στο Σχολείο μας υπό παρόμοιες συνθήκες. Στην προσομοίωση, συμμετείχαν μαθητές και μαθήτριες της Α΄ και Β΄ τάξης από τα προχωρημένα τμήματα Ξένων Γλωσσών χρησιμοποιώντας τα ελληνικά ως γλώσσα-στόχο στη μεταφραστική δοκιμασία. Διαγωνίστηκαν με τον ίδιο χρονικό περιορισμό, με τα ίδια μέσα και με τα ίδια κείμενα-πηγές στις δύο από τις 24 επίσημες γλώσσες της ΕΕ: τα αγγλικά και τα γαλλικά. Οι δέκα καλύτερες μεταφράσεις που θα προκύψουν από τα 39 συμμετέχοντα σχολεία της Ελλάδας θα λάβουν ένα δώρο από τη Γενική Διεύθυνση Μετάφρασης, ενώ οι μεταφράσεις υψηλού επιπέδου θα λάβουν ειδικό έπαινο -πάντα στο πλαίσιο του ανεπίσημου διαγωνισμού.

Οι μαθήτριες και οι μαθητές ενημερώθηκαν για τη διεξαγωγή και τα κριτήρια αξιολόγησης του διαγωνισμού  από τις καθηγήτριες Αγγλικών κ. Α. Οικονόμου και κ. Β. Κωσταρά, και την καθηγήτρια Γαλλικών κ. Σ. Καρασάββα. Κατόπιν, οι έφηβες μεταφράστριες και οι έφηβοι μεταφραστές πειραματίστηκαν με τους μηχανισμούς της μετάφρασης υπό την επίβλεψη των καθηγητριών τους και κατανόησαν ότι η μετάφραση δεν συνιστά μια απλή μεταφορά πληροφοριών από μια γλώσσα σε μια άλλη, αλλά απαιτεί την ανάπτυξη και καλλιέργεια ειδικών δεξιοτήτων. Η προσομοίωση Juvenes Translatores αποτέλεσε μια ιδιαίτερα εποικοδομητική και διασκεδαστική εκπαιδευτική δραστηριότητα, όπως μπορείτε να διαβάσετε στα σχόλια των παιδιών που ακολουθούν:

Translating was something I really wanted to try out. I think that translating idioms is challenging but this is what makes it so interesting. It is also a very fun way to spend your time. I totally recommend it!

The translation of these texts was an experience I had never had before. It felt like I could understand and make sense of everything, which made me very happy. There were expressions that I couldn’t transalte but it was an altogether desirable result.

It was an activity that I have never done before. It was something new and fun for me. I had some difficulties when paraphrasing certain words that did not have an exact equivalent in greek but, overall, my review is positive because the translation work was very entertaining and helpful. Also, I do not have a problem doing it the other way round.

The translating activity that we did was a great experience! I never actually thought how hard it is to be a translator because every language has its own expressions and certain words that cannot be translated in other languages. Of course I would do it again! It was reallly fun and I feel that I did something very productive. Lastly, I’m happy that my teacher chose to do it and I recommend she ask us to do it again.

Translating these two letters was actually a  new experience for me. I found myself get surprised because I was quite comfortable with the language but, at the same time, I realised that there are so many parts of it that we –as foreigners– haven’t discovered yet. So now, I am quite tempted to search and discover more in order to feel comfortable with idioms, phrasal vers and other expressions as well.

 I think the translation task was pretty challenging. That is because at this point I don’t fully translate in Greek everything: I read it and then explain the gist using other, simpler english words. But this task required that I find matching Greek words for every single detail. However, the text was quite interesting and the whole experience was new.

Τhe whole translation procedure was a very new and different experience for me. I’ve never done something similar. However, I found it a little boring. I don’t think I would do it again, but the experience was worth it. All in all, a nice experience but the translator’s career is crossed out.
